Make Your Own Fairy Gauntlet!
November 6, 2007 on 12:26 am | In DIY, cool stuff, costume, fairy fashion, tutorial | No CommentsWant one of those cool fairy gauntlets that you see our modern TOTF fairies wearing? Make your own! Also called arm warmers, these are incredibly simple to make and if you make them yourself, you can choose your own fabric, color, length, and then totally customize them!
Click on images for larger version.
First, get a ratty shirt of appropriate fairiness. I recommend t-shirt materials or a fabric that doesn’t unravel. Spread out the sleeves.
Measure out the length that you want your gauntlet to be. I needed about 11 inches.
Cut off the sleeves at the length you want.
Try it on for size! Too big!
Turn the sleeves inside out and sew up the excess fabric. I needed to take off 1.5 inches. A sewing machine is very handy at this point, but not necessary. You can sew with good old fashion needle and thread.
If it’s still too large, sew the sleeves even smaller. When it fits just snugly the way you like it, cut off the excess fabric.
Next, make the slit for your thumb. About one inch from the top of the gauntlet, make a 1.5-2 inch slit right next to the seam.
Now, wear your fairy gauntlet with pizzazz!
I’ll be wearing these to Loscon!
Ready to customize? Here are some suggestions. Sew a bit of lace to the end of the gauntlet. Or sew some buttons along the side. Take your sharpie and spend some time decorating your gauntlet. Easiest thing to do? Add some crazy bangles and bracelets. That’s what we do! When you are done, e-mail me photos of your fairy gauntlets!
