Shopping in Downtown Los Angeles
December 6, 2008 on 11:02 pm | In costume, fairies, photoshoots | No CommentsJoseph and I discovered Santee Alley for the first time today and spent FAR too much money buying up jackets and accent pieces for Time of the Faeries. Shopping is incredibly addictive, and somehow, shopping for fairies free you from any guilt you may feel. At least it does for me. Bad habit, Donny!
Joseph, Erin, and I spent an amazing day in downtown Los Angeles shopping for fabric and inspiration.
The Royal Fairies/Royal Court have been on our mind for the last few years. On and off, we have mused on what we wanted, but were never quite satisfied. During Jareth’s Ball in July, we struck gold with Erin, an amazing designer/muse. She consented to not only design the costumes, but also to be the model for the Royal Fairy herself, surrounded by her Fairy Court.
Today, we got to walk around downtown to conceptualize the Fairy Court, and it’s coming together beautifully. I’ll keep you updated.

Cloudcroft Photoshoots – Behind the Scenes
July 17, 2008 on 10:14 pm | In costume, fairies, fantasy photographers, models, photoshoots | No CommentsI can’t even remember how many photoshoots we did in Cloudcroft, NM! These are just some of the behind the scene photos, a quick glimpse into the hard work and side-splittin’ fun that goes into producing a TOTF photo.
Now, if I haven’t mentioned her before, I want to thank you her now: Rhonda Napoleon is a goddess! She not only produced the photoshoots by organizing the models, transportation, housing, food, location, and all the little details, she also helped me style the costumes, did all the make-up, and the hair, all while getting no sleep and working on three other photoshoots as well, with Tracy Cornett and Vicky Visconti and Francine Dufour! Without Rhonda, none of this would be possible. Thank you Rhonda! You are a truly talented and amazing person!

Make Your Own Fairy Gauntlet!
November 6, 2007 on 12:26 am | In DIY, cool stuff, costume, fairy fashion, tutorial | No CommentsWant one of those cool fairy gauntlets that you see our modern TOTF fairies wearing? Make your own! Also called arm warmers, these are incredibly simple to make and if you make them yourself, you can choose your own fabric, color, length, and then totally customize them!
Click on images for larger version.
First, get a ratty shirt of appropriate fairiness. I recommend t-shirt materials or a fabric that doesn’t unravel. Spread out the sleeves.
Measure out the length that you want your gauntlet to be. I needed about 11 inches.
Cut off the sleeves at the length you want.
Try it on for size! Too big!
Turn the sleeves inside out and sew up the excess fabric. I needed to take off 1.5 inches. A sewing machine is very handy at this point, but not necessary. You can sew with good old fashion needle and thread.
If it’s still too large, sew the sleeves even smaller. When it fits just snugly the way you like it, cut off the excess fabric.
Next, make the slit for your thumb. About one inch from the top of the gauntlet, make a 1.5-2 inch slit right next to the seam.
Now, wear your fairy gauntlet with pizzazz!
I’ll be wearing these to Loscon!
Ready to customize? Here are some suggestions. Sew a bit of lace to the end of the gauntlet. Or sew some buttons along the side. Take your sharpie and spend some time decorating your gauntlet. Easiest thing to do? Add some crazy bangles and bracelets. That’s what we do! When you are done, e-mail me photos of your fairy gauntlets!
Come back for more DIY (Do It Yourself) fairy fashion!

Getting Ready for Our First Classic Fairy Photoshoot Since Last Year
July 8, 2007 on 12:11 pm | In costume, photoshoots | No CommentsIt’s been a long time since we did a classic fairy photoshoot. We have been focus
sing on all sorts of species, and have regrettably neglected our classic fairies. Today, thanks to a new model, Sarah, we will be heading off to the mountains for some classic images.
Sarah is in makeup as I type!
I’ve snapped some photos for a tutorial on her costume, a very simple costume. I will post that as soon as I’m done creating the tutorial. Today will be a fun day! I wonder what her character name will be?
These photoshoots always turn out unexpectedly because it is a collaboration between the artist Joseph, the model, the environment, and the support personnel – in this case me and make-up artist Andrea.
